Amazing how time off work can lead to new interests. When I first went on paternity I was the stereotypical father, sort of. Yes I watched lots of sports and added on a few pounds, but I also did change lots of diapers and helped out around the house.
After a few months off I had began to become a little cranky about the additional weight I had added. The belly was bulging and it was time to make some changes. At the time I was worried about not spending too much money so decided that it was ideal to work out at home. So at the time I decided to follow P90X. It was not too bad but not really of interest after a little. I believe boredom kicked in by week two.
The next step was going back to my normal fitness routine, weight training at the local gym. The most challenging part of this was paying for a membership. For those who know my background my gym has been free for the last eight years at work. When they asked for my debit card I knew that it was time to get serious. So the gym routine began. Squat 385lbs, Bench 275lbs for three reps, Deadlift 400lbs. I was setting PB's all around and feeling strong.
Of course when training heavy the body requires lots of fuel. I made sure that I kept up the protein so my muscles could repair themselves. Hamburgers, Steaks, McDonald's you name it I ate it. Sure I made bean wrap's had salads but I ate and craved my meat.
One regular day at the gym I decided to step on the scale to see my weight, what? 218lbs. No way, I had never been over 205. Now it made sense that I was getting tired just taking the garbage down to the end of the road. Sure our driveway is steep but that is just sad. I had to figure out a way to fix this.
For some reason I ended up at Cleve's Source for Sport's checking out their loonie shoe sale. Next thing you know I was purchasing two pairs of Saucony Kinvara 2's. What was I thinking? Running shoes? When was the last time I ran other than for PT? Damn my wife will kill me if I don't use these? Rightfully so after spending that kind of money on shoes.
When becoming a runner where is the best place to learn to become one, well the internet and magazines of course. So I picked up a copy of Runner's World and started looking online when I found an article about a runner that really interested me. It was an article on Scott Jurek and it discussed his transformation to a runner and vegan. At the time I think I was mainly interested in learning about how he became a runner who would eventually win 100 mile races rather than the fact that he was a vegan. But there was a cool recipe in there that I thought I had to make at a later date.
Rarely do I have a craving for something sweet, if anything it is for something salty like chips but one day I had an urge. Next thing you know I am pulling out the magazine and whipping up some Adzuki Bean Bars. Wow these things are good. Wait they are healthy? Did I really enjoy making these? Yes, yes, and yes.
So the adventure has begun.......
By the way I could never have made this transition if it were not for my family. I have an amazing wife who just recently started her own business Porters Lake Esthetics Studio, two daughters Ava and Jorja, and my little man Koa. Jorja and her sensitivity to milk has also played a large factor on the changes we have made in our lifestyle.
